Neville and Mary Hore have farmed
the property of "Mt Alexander" since 1977 and in this time made
many improvements and changes in the farming practice. The original
2300 ½ bred ewes and 1900 others were gradually phased out and replaced
with Stonehenge wethers until the present day where only Stonehenge
bred merino wethers are run in conjunction with cattle.
The
4000 hectare property of Mt Alexander is located in the Danseys
Pass - which links the North Otago and Maniototo areas, in the Kakanui
Ranges of North Otago. The steep hill country, the homestead at
375 meters running to 1587.5 meters at Mt Knobler, is split equally
between oversown and Native Tussock, receiving an average rainfall
between 25-30 inches a year.
Programmes of topdressing and oversowing
have enabled the introduction of cattle to compliment the sheep
run on the property. There are at present 200 Hereford cross, mixed
age cows and heifers to compliment the 7500 merino wethers.
Approximately 1000 5/6-year-old wethers
are sold annually, and calves are sold privately as weaners.
Shearing is carried out during October,
the location conducive to producing good charactered, long, white,
high yielding, clean wool with a micron range of 16-20.
(Hogget 16-18, mixed age 17 -20)
